Change isn't easy

But it's so worth it.

People who declare that they love change remind me of the kind of person who overconfidently declares, in a group interview, that their only weakness is that they are a perfectionist, AND a workaholic. I am immediately suspicious.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate change, I just prefer the positive ones that I bring upon myself. You know, like getting a promotion (#momoney), moving to a more walkable and affordable city with lots of greenery (#blessed), loving someone who loves me back (#hallmarkmoment). But making changes to live a more sustainable lifestyle has not been effortless. There are benefits, but it is hard at times.
Here's why. Now that I know better, I feel irresponsible doing something that is out of step with my new values. To some, it's called "eco-guilt". For instance, I make myself cringe when I drive when I can easily bike, or when I justify (and then purchase) unnecessary items. Oh! And when I use plastic bags to pack my fruits and vegetables at the grocery store (gasp). I know, shame! Shame! SHAMMMME (belched like the sheep in Animal Farm).
Sometimes, I still do those things (ahh, I know), but I do it less and that is progress. To avoid climate action paralysis, I think to myself, if I can do without eating crispy bacon and drinking sweet, sweet, sugary pop, I have what it takes to stick to becoming eco-friendly. I also ask myself:
What can I do? What needs to change?
Works for me! I’m curious to know what works for you.
Look, these harmful habits were developed over time, are deeply ingrained in our systems, are encouraged and celebrated, and have been passed down from one generation to the next. To make lasting positive change, it makes sense that it is going to take time, a lot of self-compassion and new mental tricks to stick to doing things differently. We'll also need the support of community leaders, businesses and all levels of government to do their part leading the change.
I remind myself of this when I am navigating the discomfort and challenges that come with making so many lifestyle changes.
But overall, so far so good. I am making progress and it feels great, really great actually. By ditching the car and biking more, I am outside enjoying nature. By taking climate action, I am living better, building community, and saving money. By trying more plant-based meals, I am discovering new recipes. The list goes on.
It's not about perfection, it's just about taking the next best step.
In making changes, the adjustment is neither smooth nor convenient, but it has been worth it.
